College Alcohol Abuse Statistics in New Mexico

Alcohol abuse is one of the major health concerns for the college students in New Mexico. A study ‘College Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Use in New Mexico’ recorded the alcohol abuse trends by the college students in New Mexico for the first time.

The study was focused on college substance abuse habits, including use of marijuana and alcohol drinking. According to the survey, 41 per cent of New Mexico college students frequently involve in binge drinking. Binge drinking here is defined as consuming two or more drinks more than once in 15 days.

Other results showed that 35 per cent of them drove under influence of alcohol in past one year. Apart from driving under influence, 30 per cent of college drop-outs blame alcohol abuse for their academic failure, 59 per cent of frequent binge drinkers missed classes due to drinking alcohol, 22 per cent of moderate alcohol drinkers missed class due to drinking, 33 per cent of frequent binge drinkers are reported to have been injured due to alcohol consumption.
