Auto emergency braking (AEB) system is a safety feature which is used to alert the drive to avoid accidents. Firstly it sends warning signals to the driver. If the driver doesn’t respond to the warning signals AEB system alone has the ability to stop the vehicle. Here we’ll discuss about the types of AEB versions available in the market.
An auto emergency braking can prevent a crash or reduce the impact speed of the crash. The main features of AEB are:
- It alerts the driver to an imminent crash and help them use the maximum braking capacity of the car.
- It can apply brakes independently if the situation becomes worst.
Typically AEB systems uses sensors, radar, laser or cameras to monitor for risk and detect potential collisions with other vehicles or pedestrians. Even though AEB systems vary in their functionality, most systems will alert a warning (audible and/or visual) to the driver. AEB systems can also stop the vehicle automatically if the driver does not respond to the warning alert. Now let us discuss about the type of crash avoidance systems equipped in AEB system.
Crash avoidance systems are classified into three main categories, they are:
- Low speed system
- This type is mostly for city driving where crashing may occur even at low speeds but can cause minor injury such as whiplash injuries.
- Mostly this type of systems focus on the reflectivity of other vehicles and these are not sensitive to pedestrians or roadside objects.
- Higher speed system
- In this type of system a long range radar are used to sense vehicle ahead of up to 200 meters at higher speeds.
- This type of system is mostly preferable for long range vehicle detection.
- This system would be more useful for highway driving.
- Pedestrians
- In this type of system, a camera is used which is combined with radar to detect people or living beings through their shape and characteristics.
- It also detects the way in which pedestrians move relative to the path of the vehicle is calculated to determine whether they are in danger of being struck. After calculating it alerts the driver way ahead of reach.
These three systems of AEB cannot be available in one vehicle, but there are vehicles that may have one or two versions. It’s important to note that within each type of system there will also be variation in functionality depending on the manufacturer and even car model in terms of warnings, braking function, time-to-collision, etc. This is all about the AEB system.
