Dental implants are considered to be the best natural solution for replacing permanent teeth loss. Different types of dental implants are used depending on the patient conditions. The procedures for dental implants are classified into two types on the basis of the number of stages in treatment process. They include two-stage dental implants and one-stage dental implants.
Two-stage Dental Implants
In the first stage of surgery, a dental implant is inserted into the jawbone in such a way that the top surface remains at the same level of the bone. Then the implant is covered by stitching the gums. It is then left for some time, a few months, in order to allow the process of osseointegration. This means that the implant must integrate with the jawbone properly.
Then, the top surface of the implant is exposed and a dental implant abutment is connected. This provides a way for dental implant restoration. Once the gums are healed, a crown or a denture or a bridge is then placed.
One-stage Dental Implants
One can get much shorter treatment by the one-stage dental implants. In this procedure, the implant is inserted in such a way that the top of the implant is higher than the surface of the bone. Thus, the implant is at the height of the soft tissue. As a result, when the gum tissue is stitched, the implant gets exposed and is visible. So, once the healing is done, dental implant is connected. Then the restoration process is started. The main aim of this procedure is to avoid the second surgery that is done to expose the implant.
Implantation by any of these procedures is successful. There is one other procedure called immediate loading implantation where the implant is inserted in one-day. It includes placing the implant in only one stage. In addition, the restoration process is started immediately without waiting for long period of time. However, this type is not suitable for all cases.
