Enterprise Computing – Evolution, Impact on Businesses

Enterprise computing is changing from traditional one-to-one and client/server model to distributed and sharing systems. With fast changes in technology, there is a need for organizations or businesses to update themselves with the latest technologies in order to leverage the benefits of technology and stand strong in competition world of business.

Evolution
For a business, the flow, storing, securing and sharing of information is crucial. From the mid 1990s to late 1990s, mainframe system was most reliable for their huge data storage and ability to communicate with all other devices of the network. But mainframe system is fairly expensive, and is therefore not affordable for small and medium sized businesses.

Moreover, all the operations of an organization are depend on one (mainframe) system and all business operations will be halted if Mainframe system does not operate properly.

Mainframe computing versus enterprise computing
The issues discussed in earlier paragraphs are fixed in decentralized and distributed systems. Enterprise computing is a package of all the information technology that a business needs and is decentralized.

In such a decentralized system, all the devices connected in a network (enterprise network) communicate, and perform business operations using functions or applications (enterprise software) that are available in the enterprise software.

Impact of enterprise computing on businesses/enterprises
Enterprise computing in an organization has a positive impact on the organization, and helps organizations in many ways such as better performance, reducing the cost of business operations and increasing productivity of the business/enterprise.

Better performance
Enterprise computing comprises everything that a business requires. It provides the applications or functions that perform all operations of the business efficiently. It can also be customized as per the business’ needs.

Its software handles different areas of business from production to customer services.

Enterprise networking connects all the business systems and enables sharing information and resources.

Inexpensive
Enterprise computing is inexpensive. Enterprise computing enables sharing of general devices like printers, scanners, etc. and thus, avoiding facilitating them to every workstation individually. It also helps organizations/businesses save in cost unlike Mainframe systems, which were earlier used for all operations that enterprise computing is doing now at fairly lower price.

There is no need of multiple replicas of the data or no need to store same data in various systems of the enterprise because data on one device can be used by other device through network. Thus, it saves the cost of storage disc spaces.

Increases productivity
With enterprise computing, information and resources are shared among all systems of the network. Any user can easily retrieve the resources they need for business, and accomplish tasks quickly. Ease in communication further increases the speed of performing the task and thus increases the productivity of the person and therefore the productivity organization.

Enterprise computing has a remarkable impact on businesses because of its low cost, ease communication and its ability to make business operations fast. It is a helpful software for small and mid sized businesses.
